WHY BAMBOO?

Bamboo is the fastest growing plant in the planet and is widely considered to have a high ability to capture and sequester atmospheric carbon for up to 62 tons of Co2 annually per hectare. Higher compared to trees and consequently to mitigate climate change.

Then many durable products made from bamboo are also carbon-negative, because they act as locked-in carbon sinks in themselves and encourage the expansion and improved management of bamboo forests. Mark Sultan Gersava

Son to a farmer with 11 children, for almost 20 years, Mark’s family was one of the victims of the longest conflict in Mindanao. Becoming internally displaced people, living in extreme poverty. Dependent only on slash and burn farming and charcoal making. At 12 years old, because of poverty, Mark was separated from family for almost 5 years to continue his education. Mark Supported himself through college while still living in poverty.  But this did not hinder him from making a difference in society.

Mark started Bambuhay under D’Sustainable Planet in 2017 a social enterprise committed to helping farmers out of poverty while providing sustainable environmental solutions through innovations of the Bamboo plant.

“That is why, I aspire to become a social entrepreneur because I experienced being a beneficiary first.  That’s why I’m dedicating my life to help farmers out of poverty and helps save mother earth from environmental Armageddon. We hope to change more lives by “Living a Mark”. – to see life through their struggles and find sustainable and impactful solutions for them.

For almost two years of our operation, we‘ve already left a mark to the 181 families of farmers and 52 families already out of poverty, increased their monthly from 60USD to 520 USD.

We’ve eliminated more than 500,000 pounds of plastics, equivalent to 5.2 million of CO2 eliminated from the environment. And the reforestation of 970 hectares of deforested land, planted with 194,000  Bamboos trees.”

Farmer's Story

This is Ate Annalyn, a woman farmer. Three years after joining BAMBUHAY she has been able to build her home, purchased a tricycle as livelihood for her husband and is already out of poverty.

Before joining BAMBUHAY, Ate Analyn lived in poverty earning below 3,000 pesos monthly from farming. And, not able to graduate from high school.

Mylene Mo-Oy is an Igorot woman, and a solo parent of 4 children. One of which is experiencing muscular dystrophy. She had been working as a gardener, and her family was living below the poverty line. Mylene felt helpless and did not know how she was meant to keep her family afloat with the onset of the pandemic.

BAMBUHAY, through UNDP Philippines “Innovation Challenge: TAWID COVID19 and DTI Nueva Ecija DTI Central Luzon” partnership, Mylene was provided a sustainable livelihood, and is now earning enough to sustain the needs of her family.

She now actively plays a role in being a restorer of the planet.
