IMPACT STORIES

bambuhay-ate-annalyn

Before joining BAMBUHAY, Analyn Gapingan lived a life of daily financial struggle. Her husband worked as a carpenter, but his income was often not enough to sustain their family’s basic needs. To help make ends meet, Analyn took on multiple informal jobs doing laundry for others for only ₱200 a day, accepting house cleaning work when available, and even working as a helper in the mountains earning just ₱150 a day cutting grass and doing manual labor.

Despite her hard work, their combined income was still insufficient to support their three school-aged children. Every day was a constant effort to survive earning not enough for food and daily allowances. She endured these hardships for years, driven by her determination to keep her family going, even if it meant accepting very low-paying and physically demanding work.

Everything changed when she joined BAMBUHAY. Through BAMBUHAY, Analyn finally gained stable employment and a steady source of income, allowing her to provide consistently for her family and improve their quality of life.

Today, she expresses deep gratitude not only for the financial stability she has gained but also for the transformation in her perspective. She has come to understand the importance of environmental protection and now believes in planting more trees rather than cutting them down, as a way to prevent landslides and flooding. For Analyn, BAMBUHAY is more than just a job it is a source of dignity, hope, and opportunity. She hopes the program will continue to grow so that more families like hers can be uplifted. She is now the Quality Assurance Supervisor in BAMBUHAY.

Mylene Mo-Oy is an Ebaloi woman, a solo parent and used to be a gardener in the mountainous area of Carranglan, Nueva Ecija in the Philippines.

Before joining BAMBUHAY, Mylene struggled to support her children through small-scale farming, but frequent climate disasters, water scarcity, and crop diseases left her with barely enough harvest for daily survival. Financial instability forced her to fall behind on basic utilities, while family challenges, including separation from her husband, left her as the sole provider for three children, one of whom is chronically ill and still undiagnosed. At her lowest point, she faced overwhelming uncertainty about how to sustain her family and risked losing custody of her children due to lack of income.

Since joining BAMBUHAY as a Production Worker handling bamboo carbon sorting, Mylene has gained stable employment and financial security. She is now able to consistently provide for her children’s needs, save money, and plan for a more stable living situation. Her income has restored her dignity and strengthened her ability to care for her family without external dependency or crisis-driven hardship.

Beyond financial stability, Mylene describes a deep sense of empowerment and belonging within BAMBUHAY’s supportive work environment. In less than two months, she has regained confidence in her ability as a mother and provider, expressing happiness that she can now fulfill her responsibilities to her children. Her story highlights how sustainable livelihood initiatives not only restore income but also rebuild dignity, resilience, and hope for families in vulnerable communities.
